Wide-screen electric fires with fifteen flame colours, three flame speeds and a 1.8kW heater you can run at half power.

They plug into an ordinary 13A socket — no recess, no hearth, no dedicated spur — and drop straight into our fireplace units, which come with the opening already cut.

What it costs to run

At current energy prices, full heat is around 47p an hour and half heat around 23p. Honestly, your central heating is cheaper for warming a room. Where the fire earns its keep is a quick burst — twenty minutes takes the chill off a living room — and most of the year most people run the flames with the heat off entirely.
